Three officials from President Biden’s administration are traveling to Mexico Monday and then to Guatemala to meet with their foreign counterparts regarding solutions to immigration surges at the U.S. border. Coordinator for the Southern Border Roberta Jacobson, Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere Juan Gonzalez of the National Security Council, and Northern Triangle special envoy Ricardo Zúñiga of the State Department will discuss both short-term and longer-term immigration plans.
The majority of migrant families and children crossing from Mexico into the U.S. come from the “Northern Triangle”— Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The U.S. has reportedly been asking Mexico for help to get the border numbers under control.
The unfolding issue at the border has created a difficult situation for the president, who is caught between his promises to progressives to establish a more humane immigration system and pressure from others to send a tougher message to deter migrants from traveling to the U.S. to seek asylum. The current situation has complicated an early legislative push by President Biden to remake the immigration system.
